Alcohol dependence is linked to higher levels of transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1). This protein may contribute to liver damage and impaired brain development in affected individuals.

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate plasma TGF-beta1 levels in patients with alcohol dependence.
- To compare TGF-beta1 levels between alcohol-dependent patients and healthy controls.
Main Methods:
- Blood samples were collected from 41 alcohol-dependent patients and 41 healthy subjects.
- Plasma TGF-beta1 levels were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
Main Results:
- Plasma TGF-beta1 levels were significantly higher in alcohol-dependent patients (1,653.11 pg/mL) compared to healthy controls (669.87 pg/mL) (P=0.000).
- No significant difference in TGF-beta1 levels was observed between alcohol-dependent patients with or without liver pathology (P=0.36).
Conclusions:
- Elevated plasma TGF-beta1 in alcohol dependence may contribute to adverse health effects.
- Increased TGF-beta1 could mediate alcohol-induced hepatic fibrosis and neurodevelopmental issues.
