Summary

Bopindolol effectively lowers blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. This study shows bopindolol monotherapy significantly reduces both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate.

Background:

Hypertension is a prevalent cardiovascular condition requiring effective management.
Nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor blockers are a cornerstone in hypertension treatment.
Bopindolol offers a long duration of action and intrinsic sympathomimetic activity.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of varying bopindolol monotherapy doses in patients with essential hypertension.
To assess the dose-response relationship of bopindolol in reducing blood pressure.

Main Methods:

A 14-week, single-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 44 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension.
Patients received bopindolol monotherapy, with doses titrated from 1 mg to a maximum of 2 mg daily.
Blood pressure, heart rate, ECG, and side effects were monitored bi-weekly.

Main Results:

Bopindolol significantly reduced supine systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to placebo at 4, 8, and 12 weeks (P < 0.01).
Supine heart rate was also significantly lowered by bopindolol treatment (P < 0.01).
Dose-dependent reductions in blood pressure were observed, with the 2 mg dose showing the greatest effect.

Conclusions:

Bopindolol monotherapy is an effective treatment for essential hypertension.
The drug demonstrates a favorable safety profile with significant reductions in blood pressure and heart rate.
Titration of bopindolol dosage allows for effective blood pressure normalization in hypertensive patients.
