Study circles improved nutritional care for elderly residents at risk of undernutrition (UN). This intervention enhanced the provision of protein and energy-enriched food and may reduce low body mass index (BMI) prevalence.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Public Health
- Nutrition Science
Background:
- Disease-related malnutrition is a significant health issue in the elderly.
- Management strategies for elderly malnutrition are underexplored.
- Identifying at-risk residents enables targeted nutritional interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate if study circles and policy documents enhance nutritional care precision.
- To assess the impact of interventions on the prevalence of low or high body mass index (BMI).
Main Methods:
- A pre- and post-intervention study design was employed.
- Interventions included study circles and policy documents across six municipalities.
- Risk of undernutrition (UN) was defined by weight loss, low BMI, or eating difficulties; overweight by high BMI.
Main Results:
- The prevalence of undernutrition risk remained high (64% in 2005, 66% in 2007).
- Study circles significantly improved the provision of protein and energy-enriched food (PE-food).
- Low BMI prevalence decreased in the study circle group, while overweight increased in the policy document group.
Conclusions:
- Study circles enhance PE-food delivery for undernourished elderly residents.
- Study circles may contribute to a reduction in low BMI prevalence.
- Combining study circles with policy documents could further optimize nutritional care for at-risk elderly individuals.
