Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate eosinophils as potential diagnostic markers for chronic endometritis.
  • To determine if eosinophil presence indicates a need for plasma cell detection.

Main Methods:

  • Review of 422 hematoxylin and eosin-stained endometrial biopsy slides.
  • Immunohistochemical staining for CD138 (plasma cell marker) on biopsies with eosinophils.

Main Results:

  • Eosinophils were found in 91 of 422 biopsies.
  • 72.5% of biopsies with eosinophils showed plasma cells (CD138 positive).
  • Only 4 cases were previously diagnosed as chronic endometritis.

Conclusions:

  • Eosinophils in endometrial biopsies are a significant indicator for chronic endometritis.
  • Their presence suggests further immunohistochemical evaluation for plasma cells is necessary.
