Summary
Mediastinal carcinoid tumors are rare. This case highlights a giant carcinoid tumor in an elderly man, successfully treated with surgery and showing no signs of recurrence.
Area of Science:
- Thoracic oncology
- Surgical pathology
Background:
- Mediastinal carcinoid tumors are uncommon neuroendocrine neoplasms.
- These tumors can present with nonspecific respiratory symptoms due to mass effect.
Observation:
- A 76-year-old male presented with a giant mediastinal tumor and chronic respiratory issues.
- Surgical resection was performed for the massive tumor.
- The exact primary site of origin was challenging to ascertain due to tumor size.
Findings:
- Pathologic diagnosis confirmed a typical carcinoid tumor.
- The patient experienced no recurrence or metastasis at 6-month follow-up post-operation.
Implications:
- Surgical management can be effective for large mediastinal carcinoid tumors.
- Complete resection offers a favorable prognosis, even for giant tumors.
