    Background:

    • Opiate-like neuropeptides, such as beta-endorphin, are hypothesized to play a role in the development of schizophrenic symptoms.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential therapeutic effect of naloxone on schizophrenic symptoms.
    • To test the hypothesis linking endogenous opiates to the etiology of schizophrenia.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, crossover study was conducted with 8 schizophrenic patients.
    • Patients received intravenous naloxone (1.2 mg) and placebo in a randomized order.
