Atherosclerosis II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Tests01:27

Atherosclerosis II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Tests

Atherosclerosis is a progressive disorder that leads to the thickening and narrowing of arterial walls due to plaque buildup. This condition can cause various symptoms depending on the arteries affected:Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): This condition affects the coronary arteries and may lead to chest pain (angina), shortness of breath (dyspnea), heart attacks, and other heart disease symptoms.Cerebrovascular Disease: This affects blood flow to the brain, causing transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)...

Summary

High levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein/beta2 glycoprotein 1 (oxLDL/beta2GPI) complexes and antibodies against them are more common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, potentially contributing to organ damage.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Rheumatology
  • Cardiovascular Research

Background:

  • Elevated levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein/beta2 glycoprotein 1 (oxLDL/beta2GPI) complexes and corresponding antibodies (IgG and IgM) are observed in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
  • The role of these complexes and antibodies in SLE pathogenesis and their association with clinical manifestations require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the prevalence and levels of oxLDL/beta2GPI complexes and anti-complex antibodies in SLE patients.
  • To evaluate the relationship between these markers and clinical/serological findings, atherosclerosis risk factors, and subclinical atherosclerosis in SLE.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative analysis of oxLDL/beta2GPI complex and anti-complex antibody levels in SLE patients versus normal healthy donors (NHD).
  • Correlation analysis with clinical data (renal, neurological involvement, thromboembolic episodes), atherosclerosis risk factors, and serological markers (antiphospholipid antibodies).

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher prevalence and levels of oxLDL/beta2GPI complexes and anti-complex antibodies were found in SLE patients compared to NHD.
  • Higher titers of oxLDL/beta2GPI complexes were associated with renal involvement and prior thromboembolic events, and correlated with atherosclerosis risk factors.
  • Lower titers were observed in patients with neurological involvement.
  • Both IgG and IgM anti-complex antibodies showed an association with antiphospholipid antibodies.

Conclusions:

  • The oxLDL/beta2GPI complex and antibodies against it are prevalent in SLE patients.
  • These findings suggest a potential role for oxLDL/beta2GPI complexes and associated antibodies in SLE-related organ damage and cardiovascular complications.
