Summary

This study found a strong correlation between amniotic fluid index (AFI) measurements and actual amniotic fluid volume in mid-trimester pregnancies. However, 35% of AFI variations are due to other factors, not just fluid volume.

Main Results:

  • A strong positive correlation (r = 0.81, p < 0.0001) was observed between AFI and amnioinfusion volume.
  • The variance (r² = 0.65) indicated that 65% of AFI variation is explained by amniotic fluid volume.
  • Median AFI values increased with infused volumes: 6.5 cm (100 ml), 10.3 cm (200 ml), 13.5 cm (300 ml), and 15 cm (400 ml).

Conclusions:

  • A strong correlation exists between AFI and amnioinfusion volume in mid-trimester pregnancies.
  • While AFI is a reliable indicator, 35% of its measurement variability is attributed to factors other than amniotic fluid volume.
