Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the demographics, characteristics, treatment, and clinical course of methamphetamine body stuffers.
  • To identify clinical predictors of severe outcomes in methamphetamine body stuffers.

Main Methods:

  • A 6.5-year descriptive, nonconcurrent observational case series.
  • Involved consultation with the Oregon Poison Center for patients with methamphetamine exposure.
  • Supplemented poison center charts with hospital charts for 95% of patients.

Main Results:

  • Fifty-five cases of methamphetamine body stuffers were identified.
  • The majority were young adult males who ingested methamphetamine orally, often unpackaged.
  • Twenty-nine percent of patients experienced severe outcomes, including end-organ toxicity and agitation requiring intubation; one death was reported.

  • Methamphetamine body stuffers exhibit distinct ingestion patterns and a higher rate of severe outcomes compared to other stimulant body stuffers.
  • Elevated presenting pulse rate (>120 bpm) or temperature (>38.0°C) are key indicators of potential end-organ damage.
