[Pathogenesis of optic neuropathy in edematous exophthalmos]
Abstract:
Based on the analysis of the literature and the clinical and functional characteristics that are typical of patients with edematous exophthalmos (the author's observations), and the topographic characteristics of the orbital arterial and venous systems, the author describes the pathogenesis of optic neuropathy, whose leading element is orbital venous outflow incompetence. The proposed mechanism responsible for the development of optic neuropathy in patients with edematous exophthalmos allows one to predict good outcomes of visual disturbances during pathogenetically founded treatment.
