Summary

Few patients develop skin allergies from inhaled corticosteroids, with budesonide being the primary culprit. Other inhaled corticosteroids may be safe for those with budesonide allergy due to lack of cross-reactivity.

Background:

  • Reports on the sensitization potential of these widely used medications are limited.
  • Understanding allergic reactions to inhaled CS is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency and clinical presentation of skin allergic reactions to inhaled corticosteroids.
  • To identify the specific molecules responsible for these allergic reactions.
  • To assess cross-reactivity patterns among different inhaled CS.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of clinical data and patch test results over 18 years.
  • Inclusion of patients with identified and investigated "contact allergy" to corticosteroids.
  • Analysis of sensitization sources in patients with positive patch tests to CS.

Main Results:

  • 12 out of 315 patients with contact allergy to CS showed allergic reactions to inhaled/intranasal CS.
  • Budesonide was identified as the main allergen in 11 cases.
