Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Summary

This study details three cases of lung sarcomatoid carcinoma, a rare tumor also known as pleomorphic carcinoma. These findings highlight its distinct pathology and prevalence compared to true sarcomas.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma, also termed pleomorphic carcinoma, is an uncommon lung malignancy.
  • It is crucial to differentiate these tumors from true sarcomas, as misdiagnosis was common before advanced pathological screening.

Observation:

  • The study presents three cases of Caucasian Greek patients (2 males, 1 female; ages 67, 54, 62) who underwent surgery for lung sarcomatoid carcinoma.
  • These tumors are predominantly found in the thorax.

Findings:

  • Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinomas constitute 0.2-1% of all lung cancers.
  • These tumors are not considered significantly more aggressive than ordinary lung carcinomas.

Implications:

  • Accurate diagnosis of lung sarcomatoid carcinoma requires modern pathological techniques, including immunohistochemistry.
  • Understanding the prevalence and behavior of this rare lung cancer subtype is essential for clinical management.
