Sex-linked Disorders01:43

Sex-linked Disorders

Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.

Aneurysm II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

Thoracic, aortic arch and abdominal aneurysms are significant vascular conditions that can present with various clinical manifestations and lead to serious complications. Understanding these manifestations and the appropriate diagnostic studies is essential for effective management and treatment.Thoracic Aortic AneurysmsThoracic aortic aneurysms often remain asymptomatic until they reach a size that impinges on adjacent structures. They typically cause deep, diffuse chest pain that radiates to...

Cushing Syndrome I: Introduction01:26

Cushing Syndrome I: Introduction

Cushing syndrome refers to the collection of clinical manifestations that arise when tissues are exposed to excessive amounts of cortisol or cortisol-like medications over an extended period. Cortisol, a glucocorticoid produced by the adrenal cortex, regulates metabolism, immune responses, and the body’s adaptation to stress. When its concentration remains chronically elevated, these physiological pathways become dysregulated, resulting in the characteristic features of the syndrome.Exogenous...

Barrett Esophagus-II: Clinical Manifestations and Management

Individuals with Barrett's esophagus are often asymptomatic, but they may experience symptoms commonly associated with GERD, such as heartburn and acid regurgitation. Additional symptoms can include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, unintentional weight loss, blood in the stool (which may appear black, tarry, or bloody), and episodes of vomiting.
To diagnose Barrett's esophagus, healthcare providers often recommend an endoscopy for those showing symptoms of acid reflux. The procedure entails...
Unusual Results01:16

Unusual Results

Unusual results are those that have a very low chance of occurring. Unusual results can be identified using probabilities and the range rule of thumb. In problems involving probability, unusual results can be observed in 2 instances – an unusually high number of successes or an unusually low number of successes.
According to the range rule of thumb, any value above or below two standard deviations, 2σ  from the mean, μ  is considered unusual.
Maximum unusual value = μ + 2σ
Minimum unusual value...

Summary

Diffuse liver angiosarcoma is a rare cancer that can present with unusual blood abnormalities like anemia and thrombocytopenia. Physicians should consider this rare diagnosis when faced with these hematological findings.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Hematology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Hepatic angiosarcoma is a rare vascular tumor of the liver, comprising up to 2% of primary liver cancers.
  • Common presenting symptoms include weight loss, weakness, and abdominal pain.
  • Diagnosis can be challenging, particularly in diffuse forms.

Observation:

  • This report details a unique case of diffuse liver angiosarcoma initially presenting with hematological abnormalities.
  • The patient's condition was misdiagnosed as Evans syndrome.
  • Anemia and thrombocytopenia were the presenting manifestations, which is uncommon for this pathology.

Findings:

  • The study highlights that anemia and thrombocytopenia can be rare initial signs of diffuse liver angiosarcoma.
  • These hematological abnormalities result from a combination of underlying mechanisms.
  • Accurate diagnosis of diffuse hepatic angiosarcoma is often difficult.

Implications:

  • Physicians must maintain a high index of suspicion for diffuse liver angiosarcoma in patients with unexplained anemia and thrombocytopenia.
  • Awareness of these atypical presentations is crucial for timely diagnosis and management.
  • This case underscores the importance of considering rare diagnoses in complex clinical scenarios.
