Abstract:
The article discusses the story of Edward De Lacy Evans, a person who was born female but who lived most of his life as a man, marrying three times. Evans' story is a well known one, but it is reconsidered here alongside recent theoretical interest from lesbian, queer, and transgendered historical perspectives. Although interest in Evans was and is considerable, the article outlines the ways in which Evans' subjectivity remains elusive.
