Summary

Online continuing education courses can be a feasible way to boost nurse preceptor knowledge. However, further research is needed to determine long-term effectiveness on knowledge retention and self-efficacy.

Assessing the feasibility of online continuing education for nurse preceptors.
Focus on enhancing knowledge and self-efficacy in preceptors working with student nurses.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the feasibility of an online continuing education course for nurse preceptors.
To measure changes in nurse preceptor knowledge and self-efficacy.
To assess participant satisfaction with the online learning format.

Main Methods:

Pilot study utilizing a one-group pre- and posttest repeated measures design.
Electronic surveys used for pre-course, post-course, and follow-up assessments.
Paired sample t tests were employed for data analysis.

Main Results:

Participants (N=13) reported high satisfaction with the online course.
Significant increase in participant knowledge from pretest to post-course and follow-up.
Knowledge levels declined from post-course to follow-up; no significant change in self-efficacy was observed.

Conclusions:

Online continuing education presents a feasible approach for supporting nurse preceptor learning.
Further investigation is required to ascertain the long-term effectiveness on knowledge retention.
Additional research is needed to confirm the impact on improving preceptor self-efficacy.
