Tonsillitis, not just tonsillectomy, is linked to Hodgkin

  • The association between tonsillectomy and Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) risk is debated.
  • Underlying factors, such as tonsillitis, may contribute to this increased risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between tonsillectomy and tonsillitis with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) risk.
  • To determine if tonsillitis itself is a risk factor for HL.

Main Methods:

  • Nationwide cohort study of Danish residents (1977-2001).
  • Utilized national registries for diagnoses of tonsillitis, tonsillectomy, and HL.
  • Analyzed 124 million person-years with 2,988 HL cases.

Main Results:

  • Tonsillectomy showed increased HL risk in individuals under 15 years old (RR=3.9, 1-4 years post-surgery; RR=3.5, >5 years post-surgery).

  • Isolated tonsillitis diagnosis was associated with increased HL risk in adults (RR=3.5 for 15-34 years; RR=5.9 for 35+ years).
  • No young HL cases occurred in individuals with only tonsillitis.
  • Conclusions:

    • Tonsillitis, independent of tonsillectomy, is a significant risk factor for Hodgkin's lymphoma.
    • Findings suggest tonsillitis, rather than solely tonsillectomy, contributes to the observed HL risk.
