Summary

This study presents a simple surgical technique for complete excision of microphthalmia and its large cyst. The method ensures no cyst rupture or incomplete removal, offering an effective solution.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Microphthalmia is a congenital condition characterized by an abnormally small eye.
  • Large cysts associated with microphthalmia present surgical challenges for complete excision.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a straightforward surgical technique for the complete excision of microphthalmia with a large cyst.
  • To demonstrate the efficacy and simplicity of this novel surgical approach.

Main Methods:

  • The technique involves lateral canthotomy and disinsertion of the four recti muscles in five patients.
  • Gentle traction, blunt dissection, and protection of the cyst with a malleable retractor are employed.
  • The optic nerve is clamped and cauterized before cutting for easy removal of the eye and cyst.

Main Results:

  • Complete excision of the microphthalmic eye and its associated large cyst was achieved in all five patients.
  • No instances of cyst rupture or incomplete excision were observed during the procedure.

Conclusions:

  • The described surgical technique is simple, rapid, and highly effective for complete excision of microphthalmia and its large cyst.
  • This method offers a reliable solution for managing complex cases of microphthalmia with cystic malformations.
