Patients with fibromyalgia frequently experience gastrointestinal issues, including altered bowel function and abdominal pain, often co-occurring with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). These symptoms warrant careful assessment for improved patient management.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Rheumatology
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are conditions that frequently coexist.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in fibromyalgia patients but require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence of bowel dysfunction and IBS symptoms in fibromyalgia patients.
  • To compare gastrointestinal symptoms between fibromyalgia patients, degenerative joint disease (DJD) patients, and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A validated self-administered questionnaire was used.
  • 123 fibromyalgia patients, 54 DJD patients, and 46 healthy controls participated.
  • Prevalence of altered bowel function, bowel patterns, abdominal pain, and laxative use was assessed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 73% of fibromyalgia patients reported altered bowel function versus 37% of DJD patients and 0% of controls (P < 0.001).
  • Fibromyalgia patients exhibited higher rates of irregular bowel patterns (81%), alternating diarrhea/constipation (63%), abdominal gas (59%), and stress-related abdominal pain (64%).
  • Laxative use was significantly higher in the fibromyalgia group (19%) compared to controls.

Conclusions:

  • Fibromyalgia patients demonstrate a high prevalence of gastrointestinal complaints.
  • Assessing and potentially treating IBS in fibromyalgia patients may improve symptoms, warranting further research.
