  • Samples from patients >2 years post-laryngectomy exhibited ciliary loss and degenerative vacuoles in epithelial cells.

Conclusions:

  • Cessation of nasal breathing induces reversible degenerative changes in maxillary sinus mucosa, typically appearing after two years.
  • These microscopic changes do not adversely affect the clinical outcomes of total laryngectomy patients.
