Abstract:
At first involved in private practice the majority of midwives became hospital practitioners as great changes of social behaviour occurred after 1945. After the creation of the Order of midwives they were directly subordinated to the medical profession. Their abilities were redefined in 1983; in 1995 they found again a part of autonomy and were admitted in the teaching of the Hospitals of the Universities.
