Summary

Low vitamin E levels (serum alpha-tocopherol) were linked to a higher risk of developing cancer. This association was particularly strong for certain gastrointestinal cancers and in non-smoking men.

Area of Science:

  • Nutritional Epidemiology
  • Oncology
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Emerging evidence from animal and human studies suggests a potential cancer-protective role for vitamin E.
  • Serum alpha-tocopherol concentration is a key indicator of vitamin E status.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between serum alpha-tocopherol levels and the risk of developing cancer in a large adult cohort.
  • To explore variations in this association based on cancer site, smoking status, and selenium levels.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective cohort study involving 36,265 Finnish adults.
  • Serum alpha-tocopherol levels were measured in cancer patients (n=766) and matched controls (n=1419).
  • Mean follow-up duration was 8 years.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Individuals with lower serum alpha-tocopherol concentrations exhibited a 1.5-fold increased risk of cancer.
  • The association was most pronounced for specific gastrointestinal cancers and cancers unrelated to smoking.
  • A stronger association was observed in non-smoking men and women with low serum selenium levels.

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the hypothesis that adequate vitamin E intake may offer protection against certain cancers.
  • Serum alpha-tocopherol levels may serve as a predictive biomarker for cancer risk.
  • Dietary vitamin E's role in cancer prevention may be context-dependent, influenced by factors like selenium status.
