Quantitative evaluation of CpG island methylation in hyperplastic polyps

Microsatellite unstable colon cancers show MLH1 methylation, but proximal hyperplastic polyps do not. These polyps exhibit lower CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) methylation, suggesting MLH1 methylation is a later event in cancer development.

- Proximal hyperplastic polyps show CIMP methylation at lower levels than MSI cancers.
- MLH1 methylation and increased CIMP likely occur later in the carcinogenesis of sporadic MSI colon cancers.
