    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Materials Science

    Background:

    • Liquid crystals offer tunable optical properties.
    • The electroclinic effect provides a mechanism for light modulation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop an analog complex-amplitude modulator for light.
    • To utilize a homogeneously aligned smectic A* liquid-crystal quarter-wave retarder.
    • To enhance modulation using a reflection-mode polarization rotative phase shifter and asymmetric resonator.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of a liquid-crystal device with specific alignment.
    • Integration of a reflection-mode polarization rotative phase shifter.
    • Incorporation of an asymmetric resonator for enhancement.
    • Measurement of modulation depth and response time.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved analog modulation of 65% of a fringe.
    • Observed a 10-90% response time of 25 microseconds at 25°C.
    • Demonstrated the effectiveness of the asymmetric resonator and entrance mirror reflectivity (70%).

    Conclusions:

    • The developed liquid-crystal device effectively produces analog complex-amplitude modulation.
    • The electroclinic effect in smectic A* liquid crystals is suitable for fast optical modulation.
    • The device shows potential for applications requiring precise light control.
