Background:

  • Postpolio syndrome (PPS) affects survivors of poliomyelitis, leading to progressive muscle weakness.

  • The potential for muscle adaptation in individuals with PPS remains largely unexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the adaptability of postpolio muscles to high-intensity resistance exercise.
  • To assess changes in strength, endurance, and muscle fiber characteristics in PPS patients.
  • To determine if previously compensated muscles retain functional plasticity.

Main Methods:

  • A high-intensity resistance exercise program was administered to 12 subjects (mean age 54) with PPS.
  • Isometric and isokinetic strength and muscle endurance were measured pre- and post-training.
  • Muscle biopsies were analyzed for fiber type, size, enzymatic activity, and histopathology.

Main Results:

  • Pretraining strength was less than 50% of healthy controls, with enlarged muscle fibers and low oxidative enzyme activity.
  • Significant improvements in isometric strength (29%) and isokinetic strength (24%) were observed post-training.
  • These strength gains were maintained for a period, indicating retained muscle adaptability.

  • Postpolio muscles, even those compensated for decades, retain a significant capacity for adaptation.
