Summary

Two interventions improved emotion processing in adults with acquired brain injury (ABI). Facial affect recognition (FAR) training enhanced facial emotion recognition and socioemotional behavior, while stories of emotional inference (SEI) improved contextual emotional understanding.

  • Acquired brain injury (ABI) frequently leads to deficits in emotion processing.
  • Emotion perception difficulties significantly impact social functioning and quality of life in individuals with ABI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of two distinct interventions targeting emotion-processing deficits in adults with ABI.
  • To assess improvements in facial affect recognition (FAR) and emotional inference from context (SEI).

Main Methods:

  • Nineteen adults with ABI participated in a randomized controlled trial.
  • Interventions included facial affect recognition (FAR) training and stories of emotional inference (SEI) protocol.
  • Assessments covered facial affect, vocal affect, video affect, emotional inference, and socioemotional behavior with pretest, posttest, and follow-up measures.

Main Results:

  • The FAR intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in recognizing emotions from faces, inferring emotions from context, and socioemotional behavior.
  • The SEI intervention group showed significant gains in understanding their own emotional responses in given contexts.

Conclusions:

  • Emotion perception and processing can be enhanced through targeted training in individuals with ABI.
  • Both FAR and SEI interventions are clinically practical and show promise for improving emotional functioning in the ABI population.
