Drugs for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis in IBD
Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...

Ulcerative colitis (UC) in Saudi Arabia often presents with severe clinical and histological manifestations, particularly in males. Most patients responded well to salazopyrine, with surgery reserved for malignancy.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Internal Medicine
- Colorectal Surgery
Background:
- Increasing incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC) reported in Arab populations.
- Limited data on clinical severity, endoscopic, and histological grading of UC in this demographic.
- Need for localized data to inform patient care and management strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the disease severity and treatment response in ulcerative colitis patients.
- To assess clinical, endoscopic, and histological parameters in a Saudi Arabian cohort.
- To identify complications and outcomes in patients managed at a tertiary care center.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 34 ulcerative colitis patient records (1990-2002).
- Inclusion of clinical severity, endoscopic grading, histological assessment, and treatment response.
- Evaluation of complication frequency and surgical intervention necessity.
Main Results:
- The study included 21 males and 13 females with a median age of 35 years.
- 47% of patients presented with severe clinical disease, 29% with endoscopic grade 4, and 68% with severe histological UC.
- Salazopyrine was the primary treatment for 85% of patients, with proctocolectomy performed in two cases due to malignancy.
Conclusions:
- Ulcerative colitis in the studied population exhibits variable severity, with a higher prevalence in males.
- Salazopyrine demonstrated effectiveness in managing most ulcerative colitis cases.
- Surgical intervention was primarily indicated for the detection of malignancy.
