Employees with cancer receive better workplace support in larger organizations and the public sector. Further support is needed for employees in smaller and private sector workplaces.

Purpose of the Study:
- To survey human resources personnel in northeastern Ontario regarding workplace support for employees with cancer.
- To identify factors associated with the provision of workplace assistance for cancer patients.

- A cross-sectional survey was distributed to 255 workplaces in northeastern Ontario (December 2007-April 2008).
- 101 workplaces responded (39.6% response rate).
- Logistic regression analysis identified factors associated with workplace support, defined by paid time off for appointments, return-to-work meetings, and reduced hours.
Main Results:
- Large organization size (OR: 6.97) and public sector employment (OR: 4.98) were significantly associated with greater employer assistance.
- Public sector employers were 5 times more likely to provide assistance than private sector employers.
- Large organizations (>50 employees) were 7 times more likely to provide assistance than smaller organizations.
Conclusions:
- Employees with cancer benefit from working in larger organizations and within the public sector.
- The findings indicate a need for enhanced support strategies for cancer patients in smaller and private sector workplaces.
