Poliomyelitis01:17

Poliomyelitis

Poliomyelitis is caused by poliovirus, a small, non-enveloped, positive-sense RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family and Enterovirus genus. Transmission occurs primarily via the fecal-oral route, often through ingestion of contaminated water or food. The virus initially replicates in the oropharynx and intestinal mucosa, particularly in lymphoid tissues such as the tonsils, Peyer’s patches, and regional lymph nodes. Primary viremia follows, allowing dissemination throughout the body.In most...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

The size of the human poliovirus was estimated between 12 and 17 micrometers using ultrafiltration. Technical challenges suggest the actual virus size may be even smaller, requiring further investigation.

Area of Science:

  • Virology
  • Biophysics

Background:

  • Poliomyelitis is a severe infectious disease caused by the poliovirus.
  • Accurate sizing of viruses is crucial for understanding their structure and behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the size of the human poliovirus.
  • To explore the utility of ultrafiltration for viral size determination.

Main Methods:

  • Ultrafiltration analysis was employed to determine viral size.
  • The study involved analyzing the passage of human poliovirus through filters of varying pore sizes.

Main Results:

  • The estimated size of the human poliovirus ranged between 12 and 17 micrometers (µm).
  • Technical difficulties and low viral concentration indicated potential for a smaller actual size.

Conclusions:

  • Ultrafiltration provides an estimate for human poliovirus size.
  • Further research is needed to refine size estimation due to experimental limitations.
