Summary

This study compared how two types of sponge cells, Microciona and Cliona, react to changes in pH. The researchers found that Microciona cells behave more like bases in weak acid solutions, while Cliona cells remain more acidic. They used a solution with acetic acid and sodium chloride to test these effects. Microscopic analysis showed that Cliona cells can survive at lower pH levels than Microciona cells. The study also found that acidic conditions prevent the cells from aggregating. These differences suggest that the two sponge species have distinct physicochemical properties. The results may help explain how these sponges adapt to their environments.
