Summary

Postirradiation morphoea, a rare radiotherapy side-effect, can manifest years later. This case highlights linear morphoea appearing distant from the radiation site in a patient treated for endometrial carcinoma.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Radiotherapy is a common treatment for endometrial carcinoma.
  • Postirradiation morphoea is an uncommon but recognized side-effect of radiotherapy.

Observation:

  • A 74-year-old woman developed linear morphoea approximately 3.5 years after radiotherapy for endometrial carcinoma.
  • The morphoea lesions originated from the radiation port and extended to nonirradiated skin.
  • This presentation involved a unilateral, band-like distribution, which is not previously described in radiation-induced morphoea.

Findings:

  • The patient presented with morphoea lesions exhibiting characteristics of radiation-induced morphoea.
  • The unique aspect was the distant, unilateral, band-like spread from the initial radiation port.

Implications:

  • This case expands the understanding of morphoea presentation following radiotherapy.
  • Clinicians should consider radiation as a potential cause for morphoea, even with distant or unusual distribution patterns.
  • Further research may be needed to elucidate the mechanisms behind this specific presentation.
