Coronary Artery Disease I: Introduction01:30

Coronary Artery Disease I: Introduction

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): An Overview with Scientific InsightsCoronary Artery Disease (CAD), often referred to as C-A-D, is a prevalent blood vessel disorder classified under the broader category of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a pathological process characterized by the hardening and narrowing of arteries due to the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques. These plaques are composed of cholesterol, fatty substances, inflammatory cells, calcium, and fibrin, reducing blood flow to...

Asthma-I: Introduction

Asthma is a chronic respiratory ailment that requires careful management due to its varying symptoms and influencing factors. It is characterized by airway inflammation, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and reversible airflow obstruction, leading to symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. The symptom frequency and intensity may vary considerably over time. It is also linked to immune system responses to allergens and irritants, highlighting the complex...
Drug Toxicity: Risk factors01:24

Drug Toxicity: Risk factors

Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) are potential complications that arise during pharmacotherapy, influenced by multiple risk factors. Age plays a significant role; both neonates and the elderly are at heightened risk due to their respective immature and diminished metabolic and elimination processes. Gender also impacts ADRs, with females experiencing a 1.5 to 1.7-fold greater risk than males, which may be linked to pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and hormonal differences. Notably, neonates, the...
Acne Infection01:27

Acne Infection

Acne is a multifactorial skin condition primarily affecting adolescents and young adults, with a global prevalence estimated to exceed 75% in this demographic. The condition is characterized by the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules, and, in severe cases, cysts, particularly in areas rich in sebaceous glands such as the face, neck, chest, and back. The pathogenesis involves increased sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinization, colonization by...
Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin create...

Psychoneuroimmunology: Cardiovascular Disease

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a multidisciplinary field that examines how psychological factors, particularly stress, interact with the immune system and impact physical health. Research in PNI has shown that chronic or traumatic stress can disrupt both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. These disruptions contribute to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.
A key area of focus in PNI is the relationship between stress and coronary...

Summary

Rosacea is strongly linked to family history and sun sensitivity, not Helicobacter pylori infection. Previous smoking also increases rosacea risk, highlighting genetic and environmental factors in this common skin condition.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Epidemiology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Rosacea is a prevalent skin condition with largely unknown etiology.
  • Suspected triggers include Helicobacter pylori infection, genetics, climate, and lifestyle factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate multiple suspected risk factors for rosacea concurrently.
  • To evaluate the association between Helicobacter pylori infection and rosacea.

Main Methods:

  • Case-control study comparing rosacea patients with skin-healthy controls.
  • Data collection included questionnaires on demographics, sun reactivity, and habits.
  • Blood samples were analyzed for Helicobacter pylori serostatus.

Main Results:

  • Rosacea patients showed increased prevalence of photosensitive skin types (OR 1.75) and a positive family history (OR 4.31).
  • Previous smoking status was also significantly associated with rosacea (OR 2.01).
  • No significant differences were found in gender, H. pylori status, caffeine, alcohol, occupation, or education.

Conclusions:

  • Familial predisposition is a primary risk factor for rosacea.
  • This study found no association between Helicobacter pylori infection and rosacea.
