Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of topical acepromazine maleate on intraocular pressure in rhesus monkeys.
  • To determine if acepromazine maleate has a hypotensive effect in eyes with elevated IOP.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-seven adult rhesus monkeys were used, divided into normal and experimentally induced glaucoma groups.
  • One drop of 1% acepromazine maleate was applied to one eye, with the fellow eye serving as a control.
  • Intraocular pressure was measured at multiple time points post-instillation using tonometry.

Main Results:

  • Acepromazine maleate did not alter IOP in normal eyes.
  • A significant reduction in IOP was observed in glaucomatous eyes within 1 hour, peaking between 4-8 hours and persisting for 32 hours.
