Summary

Accidental intracameral cefuroxime injection during cataract surgery did not harm patients. All patients experienced excellent vision recovery without adverse effects, indicating the antibiotic

Background:

  • Phacoemulsification cataract surgery is a common procedure.
  • Cataract surgery requires sterile techniques and appropriate medication administration.
  • Intracameral antibiotics are sometimes used to prevent postoperative endophthalmitis.

Observation:

  • A cluster of six patients undergoing cataract surgery received an inadvertent high-dose intracameral injection of cefuroxime.
  • The incorrect cefuroxime dilution was identified postoperatively.
  • Patients were closely monitored for any adverse reactions.

Findings:

  • No adverse effects or inflammation were observed in any of the six patients.
  • All patients achieved excellent visual acuity (20/20 or better) within one week.
