Thrombocytopenia, a low platelet count, is common in malaria patients. Plasmodium vivax infections show a higher frequency of this condition compared to Plasmodium falciparum.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of thrombocytopenia in patients with malarial parasites (MP).

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted with 124 MP-positive patients.
  • Platelet counts were analyzed, defining thrombocytopenia as < 150,000/cmm.
  • Included infections with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax.

Main Results:

  • Thrombocytopenia was observed in 80.6% (100/124) of MP-positive patients.
  • Frequency was 71.87% in Plasmodium falciparum and 93.33% in Plasmodium vivax infections.
  • Plasmodium vivax infections showed a significantly higher rate of thrombocytopenia.

Conclusions:

  • Thrombocytopenia is a common hematological finding in malaria.
