Summary

Suicide attempts are rare in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. However, suicidal ideation is elevated, particularly in younger patients with major depression, which is the primary predictor.

Background:

  • Mental health comorbidities, including depression, are common in PD.
  • The prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempts in PD requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in non-demented Parkinson's disease patients.
  • To identify factors associated with suicidal ideation in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) in 90 PD patients.
  • Conducted comprehensive neurologic and cognitive assessments.
  • Analyzed suicide risk data from MINI, BDI, and HAM-D.

Main Results:

  • No suicide attempts were reported among the 90 participants.
  • Suicidal ideation was present in 14.4% of PD patients, as per the MINI.
  • Suicidal ideation correlated with younger age, earlier PD onset, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and major depression. Major depression was the strongest predictor.

Conclusions:

  • Suicide attempts appear infrequent in Parkinson's disease.
  • Suicidal ideation is potentially elevated in PD patients.
  • Major depression is the most significant predictor of suicidal ideation in Parkinson's disease.
