Background:

  • Understanding placental blood supply is crucial for studying pregnancy complications like preeclampsia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To map the arterial blood supply to the placenta in baboons (Papio hamadryas) using angiography.
  • To investigate the extent of supply from ovarian arteries to the gravid uterus.
  • To assess collateral circulation in primate uteroplacental vasculature.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic angiography was performed on baboons, including 3-vessel (aorta, bilateral common iliac arteries) and 2-vessel (aorta, unilateral iliac artery) imaging.
  • Bilateral supply and potential ovarian contributions were assessed.
  • Contralateral supply was determined by subtracting ipsilateral supply from total supply.

Main Results:

  • Angiograms indicated a higher likelihood of cotyledon perfusion by the left uterine artery compared to the right (p=0.012).
