Graves' Disease I: Introduction01:28

Graves' Disease I: Introduction

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes hyperthyroidism, or overactivity of the thyroid gland. It results from autoantibodies called thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSIs), which bind to thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptors, leading to overstimulation of hormone production and a hypermetabolic state.EtiologyAlthough considered idiopathic, Graves’ disease has well-established contributing factors. There is a strong genetic component, with increased prevalence in...

Graves Disease II: Pathophysiology

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the production of thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI) that activate TSH receptors, leading to excessive synthesis and release of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) and resulting in hyperthyroidism.Among all causes of hyperthyroidism, Graves’ disease is the most common and can happen at any age, though it is more frequent in women. It produces a hypermetabolic state with features such as weight loss, tachycardia, tremor, and heat...
Acute Pharyngitis01:30

Acute Pharyngitis

Introduction
Acute pharyngitis is the inflammation of the back of the throat (pharynx), commonly resulting in a sore throat. It is a frequently encountered condition that prompts individuals to seek medical advice.
Classification
Acute pharyngitis can be categorized based on its underlying cause:
Tonsillitis I: Introduction01:30

Tonsillitis I: Introduction

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymphoid tissue masses at the back of the throat. This condition can cause discomfort and irritation in the throat.
Etiology
Three primary contributing factors have been identified.
Tooth Anatomy01:21

Tooth Anatomy

The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.
Tonsillitis II: Management01:26

Tonsillitis II: Management

This lesson will focus on the different treatment options for managing tonsillitis, which typically depend on the cause and severity.

Summary

Subacute thyroiditis can mimic dental pain, leading to misdiagnosis. Considering thyroiditis in unexplained dental pain cases avoids unnecessary procedures and ensures timely treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Inflammatory Diseases

Background:

  • Subacute thyroiditis is an inflammatory thyroid condition often following viral infections.
  • It presents with fever, thyroid tenderness, and initial hyperthyroidism, potentially followed by hypothyroidism.

Observation:

  • A case is presented where subacute thyroiditis pain was initially misdiagnosed as dental pain.
  • Otorhinolaryngologic examination revealed no pathology, prompting further investigation.

Findings:

  • This case highlights the diagnostic challenge of subacute thyroiditis presenting as unexplained dental pain.
  • A literature search revealed no prior reports linking dental pain specifically with subacute thyroiditis.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider subacute thyroiditis in the differential diagnosis of unexplained dental pain.
  • Including thyroiditis can prevent costly and delayed treatments for dental issues.
