What is Gene Expression?01:42

What is Gene Expression?

Overview
Gene expression is the process in which DNA directs the synthesis of functional products, that is, proteins. Cells can regulate gene expression at various stages. It allows organisms to generate different cell types and enables cells to adapt to internal and external factors.

What is Gene Expression?

A gene is a stretch of DNA that serves as the blueprint for functional RNAs and proteins. Since DNA is comprised  of nucleotides and proteins are comprised of amino acids, a mediator is required to convert the information encoded in DNA into proteins. This mediator is the messenger RNA (mRNA). mRNA copies the blueprint from DNA by a process called transcription. In eukaryotes, transcription occurs in the nucleus by complementary base-pairing with the DNA template. The mRNA is then processed and...

Polygenic Traits01:18

Polygenic Traits

When more than one gene is responsible for a given phenotype, the trait is considered polygenic. Human height is a polygenic trait. Studies have uncovered hundreds of loci that influence height, and there are believed to be many more. Due to the high number of genes involved, as well as environmental and nutritional factors, height varies significantly within a given population. The distribution of height forms a bell-shaped curve, with relatively few individuals in the population at the...

DNA Microarrays02:34

DNA Microarrays

Microarrays are high-throughput and relatively inexpensive assays that can be automated to analyze large quantities of data at a time. They are used in genome-wide studies to compare gene or protein expression under two varied conditions, such as healthy and diseased states. Microarrays consist of glass or silica slides on which probe molecules are covalently attached through surface functionalization. Most commonly, the slides are prepared through the chemisorption of silanes to silica...

Area of Science:

  • Genomics
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Complex human neurological and psychiatric disorders often involve genetic risk factors.
  • Previous research indicates genetic variability in gene expression of deposited proteins impacts disease risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To comprehensively determine the effects of common genetic variability on whole genome gene expression.
  • To understand the role of gene expression in neurological and psychiatric disease etiology.

Main Methods:

  • Whole genome analyses.
  • Investigating common genetic variability.
  • Assessing impact on gene expression levels.

Main Results:

  • Genetic risk factors primarily influence gene expression rather than protein sequences.
  • Common genetic variability significantly affects whole genome gene expression patterns.

Conclusions:

  • Gene expression modulation by genetic variability is a critical mechanism in neurological and psychiatric disorders.
  • Understanding these genetic influences on gene expression is vital for disease research.
