Background:

  • Nocturnal voiding (NV), also known as nocturia, and sleep disorders frequently coexist.
  • Understanding the distinctions and associations between NV/nocturia and specific sleep disorders is crucial for effective patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the differences and associations between nocturnal voiding (NV)/nocturia and various sleep disorders.
  • To compare patients with non-bothersome NV (NNV) and bothersome NV (BNV) against those with insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), restless leg syndrome (RLS), and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD).

Main Methods:

  • An epidemiological survey was conducted involving 2271 participants.
  • Data collected included patient background, lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), sleep status, and health-related quality of life (HRQL).
  • Multivariate analyses were used to examine associations between bothersome NV (BNV) and sleep disorders.

Main Results:

  • Subjects with BNV reported worse LUTS than those with OSAS but better than RLS and PLMD.
  • Sleep status in the BNV group was intermediate compared to insomnia, OSAS, and RLS groups.
  • Insomnia and OSAS showed a strong correlation with NNV/BNV, and PLMD correlated significantly with BNV, while RLS did not show a significant association.

Conclusions:

  • Nocturnal voiding (NV)/nocturia is significantly related to sleep disorders.
  • Despite associations, NV/nocturia and sleep disorders present distinct clinical characteristics and impacts.
