Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Spinal osteochondromas are rare bone tumors typically found in adolescents.
  • This case presents an exceptionally rare instance of an osteochondroma in an elderly patient.

Observation:

  • A 75-year-old male presented with low back pain and neurogenic claudication.
  • Symptoms were linked to an osteochondroma originating from the L3 vertebra, extending into the spinal canal.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent successful marginal tumor resection and transpedicular stabilization.
  • Histological examination confirmed the osteochondroma diagnosis.
  • The patient experienced complete symptom resolution with no recurrence at 4-year follow-up.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Osteochondromas, though rare in adults, can occur and cause significant spinal symptoms.
  • Surgical intervention can be effective for symptomatic spinal osteochondromas in older individuals.
  • This case contributes to the limited literature on osteochondromas in the aged spine.
