Insights
Children in Pune orphanages show high rates of dental caries (DMFT/deft) and Molluscum contagiosum. This study highlights the urgent need for improved oral hygiene and health monitoring in institutionalized children.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Pediatric Dentistry
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Child health research has gained significant attention.
- Oral health status (DMFT/deft) of children in Indian orphanages remains understudied.
- This study focuses on children aged 1-12 years in Pune orphanages.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the DMFT/deft status among children in Pune orphanages.
- To compare oral health indicators in orphanages with the general child population in Maharashtra and India.
- To identify potential health disparities in institutionalized children.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study design.
- Assessment of Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) and decayed, extracted, and filled teeth (deft) indices.
- Clinical examination for oral health and incidental findings like Molluscum contagiosum.
Main Results:
- The DMFT/deft score was 2.58 for ages 1-5 and 2.5 for ages 6-12.
- Caries prevalence was 70.27% in the studied orphanage population.
- Molluscum contagiosum was incidentally found in 24.32% of children.
Conclusions:
- Children in Pune orphanages exhibit higher DMFT/deft scores compared to the general population.
- The prevalence of Molluscum contagiosum was notably higher in orphanage children.
- Findings underscore the need for targeted health interventions in institutionalized child populations.
Background:
In recent decades, there has been a tremendous surge of interest in issues related to child health. The present study was carried out to reveal the DMFT/deft status of children in the age group of 1-12 years, residing in orphanages from Pune, India.
Aims And Objectives:
To explore the DMFT/deft status in various orphanages from Pune (India). To find out differences, if any, between the DMFT/deft status in orphanages from Pune, India, and the general population of children below 12 years of age in Maharashtra state, India as well as all over India.
Results:
DMFT/deft of the orphanages was found to be 2.58 in the age group 1-5 years and 2.5 in the age group 6-12 years with caries prevalence in 70.27% of the children. An incidental finding of Molluscum contagiosum was observed in a significant percentage of children. The total percentage of children afflicted by Molluscum contagiosum was found to be 24.32%.
Conclusion:
The higher incidence of Molluscum contagiosum in children residing in orphanages as compared to the normal population of the same age group was reflected in the higher incidence of DMFT/deft in orphanages as compared to the normal population.

Tooth Anatomy
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.
Teeth
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin and...
