Genetic relationships among 11 Capsicum species were analyzed using 2,760 touch-down random amplified polymorphic DNA (Td-RAPD-PCR) markers. Results revealed four distinct genetic groups, clarifying relationships within Capsicum complexes.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Molecular Biology
- Plant Science
Background:
- Understanding genetic diversity is crucial for crop improvement and conservation.
- Capsicum species exhibit complex evolutionary histories and relationships.
Purpose of the Study:
- To estimate genetic relationships among 24 accessions from 11 Capsicum species.
- To delineate genetic boundaries of known Capsicum complexes using molecular markers.
Main Methods:
- Utilized 2,760 touch-down random amplified polymorphic DNA (Td-RAPD-PCR) markers.
- Employed principal coordinates analysis, unweighted pair group mean average, and bootstrap replications for analysis.
- Calculated genetic similarity using Jaccard's coefficient.
Main Results:
- Accessions clustered into four main groups, aligning with established Capsicum complexes (C. annuum, C. baccatum, C. pubescens).
- C. chacoense accessions showed equidistant relationships to the C. annuum, C. baccatum, and C. pubescens complexes.
- Highest genetic variation was observed within the C. pubescens complex, while the C. baccatum complex displayed low variation.
Conclusions:
- Td-RAPD-PCR markers effectively distinguished genetic relationships within Capsicum species.
- The study provides a molecular basis for understanding the evolutionary divergence and relationships among Capsicum complexes.
- Findings support the distinctness of major Capsicum complexes and highlight the unique position of C. chacoense.
