  • Data from the national Malaria Reference Laboratory (MRL) and Hospital Episode Statistics were matched.
  • Matching criteria included demographic, geographic, parasitological, and temporal information.

  • An estimated 4607 malaria cases occurred in England over 18 months (July 2003-December 2004).
  • The national Malaria Reference Laboratory (MRL) captured 56% of all cases.
  • Case ascertainment was higher for Plasmodium falciparum (66%) and London cases (62%).
