Two transscleral Nd:YAG laser delivery systems, LASAG and Surgical Laser Technologies (SLT), showed equal efficacy in lowering intraocular pressure in rabbits. Histological changes were also examined.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Medical Devices
- Laser Therapy
Background:
- Transscleral cycloablation is a procedure to reduce intraocular pressure.
- Different laser delivery systems may impact treatment efficacy.
- Comparing laser delivery systems is crucial for optimizing glaucoma treatment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the efficacy of two contact transscleral Nd:YAG laser delivery systems.
- To evaluate a synthetic sapphire-tipped laser probe (Surgical Laser Technologies - SLT) versus a quartz fiberoptic tip (LASAG Microrupter III).
Main Methods:
- Transscleral cycloablation was performed on pigmented rabbits using either the LASAG or SLT laser system.
- Specific energy settings (3.2 W, 0.5 s for LASAG; 3.0 W, 0.5 s for SLT) were applied.
Main Results:
- Both laser delivery systems effectively reduced intraocular pressure in rabbits.
- The maximum intraocular pressure reduction was -15.09 mm Hg with LASAG and -13.16 mm Hg with SLT.
- The duration of pressure reduction was not statistically different between the two groups (p = 0.83).
Conclusions:
- The LASAG and SLT transscleral Nd:YAG laser delivery systems are equally effective for lowering intraocular pressure in rabbits.
- Histological examination of ciliary processes and surrounding ocular tissues was conducted.
