Summary

This study identified 10 cases of aggressive adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) in South Florida, all linked to human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) infection. The findings highlight the importance of considering HTLV-I in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnoses within at-risk populations.

Background:

  • Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is an aggressive malignancy.
  • Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is a known cause of ATL.
  • ATL prevalence varies geographically, particularly in endemic regions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report on cases of ATL diagnosed in South Florida.
  • To investigate the association between HTLV-I and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in this patient cohort.
  • To determine the prevalence of HTLV-I-related lymphoma in the studied population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of 10 ATL patients diagnosed between February 1988 and July 1989.
  • Serological testing for HTLV-I and HIV-1.
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and blot hybridization for HTLV-I proviral DNA detection.

    • HTLV-I infection is strongly associated with ATL in this South Florida cohort.
    • A significant proportion of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cases in this population may be attributable to HTLV-I.
    • Clinicians should consider HTLV-I as a potential etiology for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, especially in patients from HTLV-I endemic regions.
