Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is effective for vulvar and cervical cancers but requires further refinement for endometrial cancer. This technique aids in staging gynaecological malignancies.

  • Sentinel lymph node (SLN) identification is standard for melanoma and breast cancer.
  • Its adoption in gynaecologic cancers is limited by a lack of extensive validation studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and outcomes of the SLN technique in gynaecologic malignancies at our institution.

Main Methods:

  • 155 patients with vulvar, cervical, and endometrial cancers were studied.
  • Lymphoscintigraphy with (99m)Tc-nanocolloid was performed pre-surgically.
  • Intraoperative SLN detection used a gammaprobe and blue dye; pathological analysis was conducted on all SLNs.

Main Results:

  • SLN identification rates were 97% for vulvar, 92% for cervical, and 64% for endometrial cancers.

  • Conclusions:

    • Lymphoscintigraphy is a practical method for SLN identification in gynaecologic tumors.
    • The SLN biopsy shows promise for vulvar and cervical malignancies.
    • Further optimization is needed for endometrial cancer SLN identification.
