Summary

Plerixafor, a novel stem cell factor, successfully mobilized hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation in a patient with mantle cell lymphoma when standard methods failed. This offers a new option for stem cell harvesting in challenging cases.

Background:

  • Standard mobilization protocols may not be effective in all patients.

Observation:

  • A 66-year-old male with mantle cell lymphoma failed to mobilize sufficient stem cells using chemotherapy and filgrastim.
  • Plerixafor, a CXCR4 antagonist, was administered after obtaining regulatory approval.
  • The patient received filgrastim followed by plerixafor for stem cell mobilization.

Findings:

  • Plerixafor, in combination with filgrastim, enabled successful harvesting of adequate hematopoietic stem cells.
  • This approach overcame the mobilization failure encountered with standard treatments.
