Background:

Understanding how infants process sequential information is crucial for cognitive development research.
Early sequence representation may rely on statistical learning or abstract positional encoding.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate whether 4-month-old infants represent sequences by tracking statistical relations or abstract ordinal positions.
To determine the primary mechanism infants use for learning the order of elements in a sequence.

Main Methods:

Infants were habituated to sequences with varying ordinal positions and an invariant target element.
Behavioral testing assessed infants' detection of changes in the target element's position.
Statistical co-occurrence and invariant ordinal position were manipulated to differentiate learning mechanisms.

Main Results:

Infants detected ordinal changes only when they disrupted statistical co-occurrence.
No detection of ordinal changes was observed when statistical information was controlled.
Results indicate a reliance on statistical associations for sequence order learning.

Conclusions:

Four-month-old infants primarily learn sequence order by tracking statistical associations among elements.
Abstract ordinal position encoding is not the primary mechanism for sequence learning at this age.
This study advances our understanding of early statistical learning and sequence representation in infancy.
