Summary

Pemphigoid gestationis (PG) is a rare pregnancy-related autoimmune blistering disease. This study found that newborns of mothers with PG have good outcomes, with no skin lesions and normal development.

Background:

  • Pemphigoid gestationis (PG), also known as herpes gestationis, is a rare autoimmune blistering disease linked to pregnancy.
  • It typically manifests in the second or third trimester but can occur anytime during pregnancy or postpartum.
  • PG shares clinical, histologic, and immunopathological similarities with other pemphigoid disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report on seven patients diagnosed with pemphigoid gestationis.
  • To analyze demographic and clinical findings in these patients.
  • To assess the outcomes for newborns born to mothers with PG.

Main Methods:

  • Case series of seven patients diagnosed with PG between 1996 and 2008.
  • Clinical and demographic data were collected.
  • Immunofluorescence and ELISA were used to detect specific antibodies and factors.

Main Results:

  • Patient demographics and clinical presentation aligned with previous reports.
  • Immunofluorescence showed complement C3 and IgG deposition along the basement membrane zone in 85% of patients.
