Association study between the pericentrin (PCNT) gene and schizophrenia.

Genetic analysis of the Pericentrin (PCNT) gene revealed no significant association with schizophrenia (SZ) in the Japanese population. While one single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) showed a trend, overall PCNT may not be a major independent risk factor for SZ.

- Disrupted-in-schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) is a genetic risk factor for schizophrenia (SZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD).

Purpose of the Study:

- Nine SNPs in the PCNT gene were analyzed in 1,477 individuals (726 SZ patients and 751 healthy controls).
- Allelic and genotypic frequencies, as well as haplotypic associations, were compared between cases and controls.

- No significant differences in allelic or genotypic frequencies were observed for eight of the nine analyzed SNPs.
- One SNP, rs11702684, showed a trend towards different allelic distribution (P = 0.042), but this did not reach statistical significance after permutation correction.
- Haplotype analysis did not reveal any significant associations with SZ.
Conclusions:
- The PCNT gene may not play a major independent role in the etiology of schizophrenia (SZ) in the Japanese population.
- Further research may be needed to explore potential indirect or epistatic interactions involving PCNT in SZ pathogenesis.
